Geeston Lodge Country House Auction

It is not often that you have an opportunity to view in situ and buy the contents of a local country house.  However, this was just what was on offer at Stamford Auction Rooms this month.  

Buyers and collectors alike were keen to see this stunning home in Geeston meaning viewing was buzzing and the team here were flat out with condition reports and pre-sale bids, giving a hint of what would happen on sale-day.  

With a new on-line platform dedicated to Stamford Auction Rooms clients joining the internet platforms and telephone bids at the ready the auction began with silver.  Always a strong section in our sales, the local interest focussed in on a fabulous George III silver presentation tankard, awarded for the best Three Long Woolled Fat Wether Sheep by The Rutland Agriculteral Society in 1859 which sold for a hammer price of £1,500, and various associated silver medals selling for ten times estimate at £700.

After significantly impressive results throughout the sale the final section came – furniture and some of the best results of the day.  Provenance and quality were the key ingredients here, meaning that a fabulous bed, made for the late owner rocketed to a final hammer price of £2,600, followed almost immediately by fierce bidding for the dressing table and washstand, also made for the owner’s bedroom.  The hammer finally fell at £4,500.  It is great to see furniture and genuine antiques beginning to finally make their mark again in saleroom, with a number topping the thousand pound mark.  I think one of the prettiest in the sale was an oyster veneered side table, which sold for £2,600.
