Luck of the Irish

Irish thoroughbred artists set a winning streak for Stamford Auction Rooms in our summer Fine Art & Antiques Auction, starting with two much desired paintings by Letitia Hamilton which had multiple phonelines and all three bidding platforms buzzing with excitement. 

First to be sold was this stunning scene of Street Mazarre on the Iberian Coast selling for £4,000 + commission:

Lot 13 estimate £1500-2500

Swiftly followed by this Irish study of The Quays, Cork, selling for £9,000+ commission:

 lot 14 estimate £2000-4000

Later on in the auction, within a fabulous furniture section, there were some top quality pieces, including this incredible Victorian Irish Killarney Marquetry Davenport, which developed much attention within the weeks leading up to it comming under the hammer. The £5000-8000 estimate proved to be conservative when the fierce competition from all bidding platforms and telephones took it to an impressive £14,000 + buyers commission at the fall of the gavel.

Sold: £14,000 + commission

Among other great auction results was a Barbara Warren RA oil on canvas titled Ibiza, seen below which achieved £3200:

Sevres porcelain has always been synonimous with exquisitequality, and so it was no surprise that this dessert service flew well over the conservative £500-800 pre-auction estimate and sold for £2,300 + buyers commission.

Our reputation for militaria continued to grow with a very rare WWI tank crew splatter mask which sold for £850, past its £300-500 pre-auction estimate:

The always popular toy and model section of the auction had some interesting examples of Mamod engines, including a SE4 Sirit fired twin cylinder stationary engine, steaming well over the £100-150 estimate to sell to an internet bidder at £550:

Musical instruments are also very sought after, particularly when a rare or early example comes to the market at Stamford Auction Rooms, including this lovely Rudall Carte & Co picollo flute in the original case which sold above estimate at £280:
