Summer Delights on Auction Day

Our Fine Art, Antiques & Collectable auctions include items from all collecting fields, usually starting with fine porcelain and finishing with furniture, and our auction held in July had some wonderful results for our sellers and buyers alike, here are some of our auctioneers favourites:

Porcelain

For the discerning collector of English and European porcelain there were some fabulous lots on offer today at SARs, with this interesting collection of twelve demitasse cups and saucers including Royal Worcester, Coalport, Limoges and Sevres which sold for £600.

This stunning early 20th century Royal Worcester plate painted by Walter Sedgley, with a Stag in the highlands, reminiscent of Landseer sold for £800, well surpassing it's conservative £150-250 pre-auction estimate.

and this fabulous collection of porcelain miniatures including Chelsea, Royal Crown Derby, Meissen, and Royal Worcester selling for a staggering £750.

Asian Artefacts

Chinese porcelain of superb quality continues to cause a stir amongst collectors, with this impressive 19th century Qing Dynasty Canton porcelain baluster vase, with flared rim and dragon form handles, the celadon ground depicting butterflies, flowers, fruits and bats, with a central reserve of the 108 outlaws from the Song Dynasty novel The Water Margin, bringing in telephone, commission bids and fierce internet bidding to finally sell on the telephone for £4,500.

Militaria

SARs reputation for rare and superb collections of militaria continues to bear fruit as this rare WWI death plaque complete with scroll to Pte William Christopher Brumby, Australian Infantry, A.I.F, 31st Bn, proved selling well over estimate for £480. 

Collections of letters and photographs are often sought after by collectors, historians and museums alike and this touching group of love letters, photographs and telegrams between Maureen Patrick & Airan Neville Carlisle, until he went missing in action was one of the most poignant groups to have come up in a while.  Whilst selling them, Jessica said that she hoped they would end up being appreciated for their importance in wartime history.

Lot 374 in the auction was an oil on copper by W. Melville (19th century): portrait of an Officer of the 16th Lancers, with medal for the 1845 Battle of Sutlej which appealed to both militaria and painting collectors, together with the combination of renowned artist and important sitter encouraged bidders to far exceed the pre-auction estimate of £300-500 to a heady £2,600 hammer price.

Textiles & Interiors

Perfect for the Georgian country house this Abusson tapestry in the 18th century style, designed by Louvieres it would grace any wall, ideally perfectly lit with wall sconces such as this group of four rococo gilt wall brackets which sold for the same price of £340.

Quality always shows through and even when the label may be absent the true connoisseur can spot a truly stunning piece, be it furniture, paintings or, as in this case Victorian cast ironwork.  This stunning bench with naturalistic vine pattern typical of Coalbrookdale sold for over ten times its lower estimate of £200-£300 for £2,800.
